Chapter 2 |
|
|
|
[intro Nasin, (Matt C.)] |
|
21 Oct 673 (cont): Meanwhile: Nasin, [Matt C.] an elven thief from the Axewood is watching the road just outside of Cryllor. Suddenly, a half-elven woman comes crashing through the brush behind him and collapses. She wears only a tunic and is scratched, beaten and bruised all over. Nasin manages to get her name, Andrial, but that is all she is able to tell him before passing out. He quickly checks her over once and finds that she has nothing else on her, so he then cares for her injuries. Some of her wounds were definitely inflicted by weapons. He soon sees a merchants' cart approaching on the road and convinces the driver, Kaar of Cryllor, to ride them into town. Kaar agrees and takes them straight to the nearest physician's house. Nasin convinces Kaar to come in with him (for moral support), but while the physician cares for Andrial the thief slips out through the front door. He intends to have a quick look in the merchant's cart.
03 Dec 673 (cont): Evening in the House of the Red Arrow Inn: Folcard does not seem very "king-like" to Trill and Baidien. Wilfor and Maegerth are also here at the inn and disappear upstairs to their rented room. Trill decides to do a little spying to learn what these two are truly up to. He chooses a seat near an open window and sends his Homonculus, Ttherion, out to spy on them. The Homonculus positions itself outside of the window of Wilfor and Maegerth's room and Trill is able to overhear part of their conversation and even peak in through the closed shutters. They briefly discuss a small, mysterious item that Maegerth holds in the fingers of his hand. Maegerth seems eager to let Folcard go his own way and wants to investigate the origin of the strange item. He talks of going back to where they aquired it. Wilfor seems uncooperative.

21 Oct 673 (cont): Cryllor: Nasin carefully lifts the tarp a
bit and peeks into the back of Kaar's cart. There are several crates
with straw and hay strewn about. He also sees a stray leather pouch
stuck between two crates. Just then, he hears the door to the house
open and Kaar emerges calling to him. Still sheilded from merchant's
view by the size of the cart, Nasin has enough time to quickly snatch the
pouch and secure it in his tunic. He then begins swatting at imaginary
mice while urgently calling Kaar over. When Kaar joins him Nasin
claims that there are several mice crawling about in his cart. Even
though he has food in the cart, the merchant seems unconcerned. The truth
is that Kaar is tired from driving all day and is eager to get home.
He informs Nasin that his "girlfriend" is fine and that she is awake.
He then says farewell and drives off on his cart.
Nasin peeks into the pouch, but in the darkness
of the evening he can only see that there are several small items and some
coins within. He enters the house and asks the physician if he can
have a moment alone with his "girlfriend". The physician agrees and
leaves the room. Nasin talks to Andrial, indicating to her that she
should play along in case anyone is listening in. She is very groggy,
but seems to play along with his charade. Nasin tells her his name
is Kellindill and asks what happened to her. She very quietly explains
that the previous few days are a bit blurred. She remembers a battle
at a temple of Set in the mountains where she was seperated from her friends
and then fell unconscious. When she awoke, she found that she had
been
robbed of everything and apparently left for dead. The following
days were spent wandering in the wilderness, half-dazed. She remembers
fleeing from some brigands and collapsing at Nasin's feet.
Nasin talks with the physician again asking
how much the treatment will cost. The physician, however, graciously
waives any charges for his service and states that Andrial can sleep in
his house for the night. Nasin thanks him and then leaves, promising Andrial
that he will return in the morning. Outside, he asks for directions
to the nearest inn and soon finds it near the center of town. He
inspects the stolen pouch and finds a fishing hook and line, a tinderbox,
and 14 sp. That night he sleeps in the common room of the Inn of
the Turning Wheel.
22 Oct 673 (cont) Morning: Nasin awakens and makes his way to
the market square, intending to look for Kaar. After waiting a couple
of hours, Kaar shows up with his wagon and begins to set up his wares.
A guard passes by and engages in friendly chat with the merchant.
Nasin approaches thanks him again for his good deed of the previous night.
Kaar then mentions that he is missing a small leather pouch and suggests
that he may have lost it while transfering the woman in and out of his
cart. Nasin denies having seen it and then leaves Kaar to his work.
He soon finds a small fat man in the market and convinces the man to check
out Kaar's wares. Nasin follows the man over to the cart and then
bumps into him pretending to grab Kaar's pouch from the fat man's
belt. He then calls to Kaar claiming that he's just found the merchant's
pouch on this man's belt. The fat man pushes Nasin away and is obviously
very upset and confused by this charade. After a bit of arguing two
town guards arrive and take control of the situation. One is the
same man that chatted with Kaar earlier. The guard takes the pouch
from Nasin and then compares it's contents to Karr's verbal description
of his missing pouch. He seems to already know the fat man and of
course Kaar, but is unfamiliar with Nasin and therefore suspicious of him.
After hearing Nasin's story he gives the pouch back to Kaar and tells Nasin
to leave the market square.
Nasin leaves the market and goes to the physician's
house. He finds Andrial awake and dressed, sitting next to the warm
fireplace and drinking tea. They quickly exit so that they can talk
freely outside. Andrial explains that she intends to find her friends,
Trill and Baidien who are probably still somewhere in the area. Nasin agrees
to tag along. Andrial spends some time asking around the town and
discovers that Trill & Baidien passed through the north gate, heading
off towards Flen only yesterday. She now intends to follow them north,
but first she must equip herself. She has no money, so she vists
the Harper's Guild (of which she is a member) and they provide her with
some traveling equipment that includes two blankets, and some provisons.
Andrial and Nasin follow Trill & Baidien north through Flen, Istivin,
Hochoch, part of the Dim Forest, past the Rushmoors and through Shiboleth.
They finally arrive in the village of Montek Keep on the evening of Dec
3rd. During the journey, Nasin is able to practice just enough thievery
to survive [100 XP is awarded]. He also reveals his real name to
Andrial.
03 Dec 673 (cont): Meanwhile, in the House of the Red Arrow: Trill continues to spy on Maegerth and Wilfor (through Ttherion) and overhears them talking of splitting up in the morning. The light is extinguished and they both turn in. Meanwhile, downstairs as the last person leaves the tavern a familiar woman enters followed by an elven man. Trill and Baidien immediately greet Andrial and she introduces them to Nasin. The party talks briefly, exchanging stories, before settling in to sleep in the common room.
04 Dec 673 Morning: Trill is awakened by Ttherion. Ttherion
informs the elf that Maegerth is up and about. Trill formulates a
plan and waits for Maegerth to enter the common room. Maegerth finally
enters and Trill suddenly starts a conversation with Baidien, speaking
loudly so as to draw Maegerth's attention. Trill indicates that he
is an expert at identifying ancient artifacts. Maegerth approaches
and asks to join them. After sitting, he asks if Trill lives nearby,
but Trill answers no and Maegerth loses interest in the conversation.
He leaves them and moves off to another table to eat by himself.
Trill decides to cast a "Detect Magic" spell, hoping that it might reveal
the nature of the object in Maegerth's pouch. As he begins the spell,
Maegerth looks over with a sideways glance and then abruptly rises and
leaves through the front door. Trill directs the spell towards Meagerth
who is now outside, but detects nothing. He then looks around the
room, detecting magical auras from Baidien's longsword and Folcard's shield.
Looking up, he detects an aura from a dagger sized object in Wilfor's room
just above.
The party talks about their next destination,
and decides to travel south to Niole Dra. Folcard rises and angrily
walks out, he has no intention of following anyone to Niole Dra.
First, the party follows Trill to the market square, where Trill intends
to buy some small sacks and pouches. He haggles with a shopkeeper
and finally gets 5 small sacks for a good price. He then buys two
clay bottles for 7 sp.

around and see what they can afford to buy for her
-Soon, back in the market square, they find a man selling handcrafted
wooden flutes and whistles
-Andrial tries out a few and they end up buying her a relatively inexpensive
whistle
-They then return to the White Stallion and to speak with the innkeeper
about performing
-The innkeeper explains that the minstrels are actually his brother
and some local friends... they are not very good and he will happily replace
them if Trill and Andrial can play something
-He is easily convinced by their unrehearsed audition and agrees to
give them all a free room and meals for their stay
-Nasin shows him some juggling tricks and the innkeeper allows him
to perform too (as long as he doesn't juggle any knives!)

wonders of the world
-The others agree that that is a fine idea
-Soon, it is time to leave.
-Andrial and Nasin accompany Trill, while Baidien decides to stay behind
and drink beer for breakfast
-A few minutes after their departure, though, Baidien changes his mind
and leaves to investigate the market again
-Meanwhile, Trill and company finally meet with Aeldath in his cramped
and cluttered office
-Trill explains that he has a strange item that he wishes to research
and also mentions Loakian's name during their intros
-Aeldath studies the small, smooth, oval stone for a few minutes and
then reports that he typically does not let others use his office and materials
for research.
-He further explains that he thinks the item may be a an ancient artifact
of some kind and that he would like to research it himself
-Trill explains that his only concern is that of payment... he has
very little to offer
-Aeldath understands, but may have a solution
-Aeldath explains that he is quite a busy man (and rather old) and
that he is unable to search for these type of artifacts. He suggests
that Trill (and his friends) could search for him
-Trill likes the idea and agrees.
-Trill and company depart from the castle, leaving the stone with Aeldath

13 Dec 673: Baidien wanders about the market square. As he investigates a clothing vendor on the fringes of the market he overhears two men talking in an alleyway.
Man 1: "Yeah, he was with the other elf... and the
good-lookin' blonde. They went inta the castle like they was expected...
real important like."
Man 2: "Whaddya think they're doin' in there?"
Man 1: "I dunno, but I say we hit 'im tonight..."
Man 2 interrupts: "No! Tha Brother said not to touch
him."
Man 1: "I don't care! You know what he was
into last night! He's pickin' *our* turf! Fer that he's got
it comin'!"
Man 2: "I'm tellin' ya... Yer askin' fer trouble
if ya cross the Falconers..."
Their conversation fades as they move off deeper into the alleyway. Baidien watches them discreatly as they move away. He resists the urge to follow them, but takes mental notes on any ditinguishing clothing they are wearing so that he can possibly identify them later (he cannot see their faces as they are moving away from him). He then returns fuming to the White Stallion, he is eager to confront Nasin about this development.
Meanwhile: Trill & Andrial [with Nasin] leave the castle and decide to practice their act for a bit. Andrial suggests that they set up in or near the market square and earn some money in the process... but they will need a hat with which to collect coins. Trill buys a fur hat in the market for 3+1/2 gp. Trill & Andrial then perform for a couple of hours [during which Nasin wanders off into the market] and earn several silver pieces. Trill tries enhancing their performance with a few cantrips, but since he's never tried this before his timing is a bit off in a few spots.
Late Afternoon: Trill & Andrial return to the White Stallion. Baidien is obviously upset at Nasin (who still hasn't returned) and shares his info with Trill & Andrial as they eat their meal. They discuss this development for a bit until it is time to perform for the inn patrons. Trill & Andrial perform for a few hours taking in 11 sp.
Later: As Trill, Baidien & Andrial sit in the common room
relaxing a cloaked figure enters through the front door. It is Aeldath!
Aeldath asks (apologetically) to speak to Trill alone. Once in private,
he explains to Trill that the stone is an ancient artifact, once powerfully
enchanted, but now faded almost beyond detection. He identifies it
as an ancient Ioun Stone, though it's purpose or function is unknown now
in it's burned out state. He encourages Trill to discover where it
was found (as there may be other treasures like it there!). The sage
then explains that there are men called Seekers that are constantly searching
for these ancient artifacts and any knowledge associated with them.
Seekers are the footmen of the various secret societies and circles of
wizards (the wizard guilds of Oerik). Aeldath reveals that these
secret guilds are spread out far and wide over all of the known world of
Oerth and even beyond to other worlds. Trill is very intrigued by
all of this! Aeldath also admits that he knows of Trill... or rather
that the famous mage Loakian was known to have taken an apprentice.
Aeldath admits to being impressed with Trill's background and offers to
sponsor Trill for membership into his guild (called the Society of the
Owls). Trill is interested, but Aeldath tells him not to wait around
as this may take some time to set in motion. He gives Trill the entry-level
password ("Bells of Dunmoore") for his guild and tells Trill that he wants
to he can check back again in about a month's time. If anything develops
earlier than that, he will send word to Trill. Just before departing,
Aeldath explains that if anything should happen to him, Trill should go
see his acquaintance, Sam Bain, in Greyhawk. Sam will honor the password
that Trill has just acquired.

13 Dec 673 (cont):
-Nasin returns to the White Stallion just as Aeldath is exiting the
inn.
-Nasin sits down opposite of Baidien and Baidien immediately reaches
over the table, grabbing Nasin by the collar.
-Baidien is angry at Nasin for his midnight shenanigans.
-Trill only watches, but Andrial tries to calm Baidien down and break
them apart.
-Nasin remains calm during Baidien's outburst and Baidien himself eventually
calms down, letting go of the elf.
-Baidien warns Nasin to stay out of further trouble.
-It is decided that a watch should be kept during the night.
Night:
-Trill hears noises from the stables outside their window during his
watch.
-He immediately wakes Baidien and sends Ttherion out to investigate.
-Ttherion sneaks quietly into the stables and spies someone sneaking
around in one of the horse's stalls.
-That particular horse does not belong to the party, though, so Ttherion
only watches without interfering.
-The stranger then sneaks out of the stables and proceeds to leave
through the back gate.
-Trill and Baidien can see that he is a young man with long hair.
-As the stranger carefully closes the gate, Baidien yells to him: "Put
this in yer report!" and fires a warning shot from his bow at the fence
post!
-The stranger stands frozen for a moment as Baidien's arrow strikes
it's mark.
-He then bolts up the street and out of sight.
-The rest of the night passes uneventfully.
14 Dec 673 Morning:
-The party has decided to depart Niole Dra and journey westward to
Loftwick in the Yeomanry to collect a monetary reward owed to Baidien and
Trill by Crispin Redwell, the Spokesman for the Yeomanry league.
-They first stop at a stable on the west side of Niole Dra and sell
their two riding horses for 60 gp total.
