Nifft
human male rogue
[fraz] [10 Apr 03]

Nifft was born as the younger of two sons in the small town of Woodfork. His family was not very wealthy. In fact, they were only just able to get by most of the time. Nifft's father, Kent Flynholt, was a non-guilded locksmith by trade and fully expected both of his sons to follow him in the locksmith profession. Nifft, therefore, learned much about locks and mechanical contraptions at a very early age. As a child, Nifft often snuck away from his chores to run about with the local street urchins and eagerly showed off his developing lockpicking skills whenever the occasion presented itself. Although Nifft's skill with locks was still very unrefined at this age, he was still more adept than any of his peers.

As he approached his teenage years, pressure from home built for him to continue his locksmithing apprenticeship, and his father, fed up with his youngest son's roguish ways, finally sent Nifft off to the city of Waterdeep where he was to work under the close guidance of a guilded locksmith named Herrik Underthen. However, his own interest was somewhat lacking, and the city presented far too many opportunities for distraction. Nifft soon abandoned the locksmithing trade, and, relying on his natural acrobatic talents, attempted to join the local Thespian's Guild. The thespians took him in for a short time, during which he refined his acrobatics and learned some costuming techniques. However, soon after joining, curiosity and poor judgement (along with a good display of lockpicking) lead Nifft to break into the head thespian's quarters. As might be expected, the head thespian returned to find Nifft rummaging through his belongings. His trial membership was promptly terminated and he was thrown back out onto the streets.

At this point, with nowhere to go, Nifft took to living in the streets of Waterdeep for a while, often begging for his meals. The local chapter of the Thieve's Guild attempted to recruit him on several occasions (sometimes forcibly), but by this time he had developed into a bit of an anarchist and the thought of belonging to any organization had completely lost any appeal. He continually managed to avoid or otherwise escape the thugs until, finally, at the age of 18 he left the city to return to his roots in Woodfork. It was here that he again met Vi'lia Saathlynthrial, an elven woman whom he remembered seeing in the town when he was a child, and they were soon called upon to work together to aid their fellow townsfolk in distress.

Vi'lia Saathlynthrial (vai-leeah sath-lin-thrial)
elven female paladin of Saathrial
[Kris B.] [10 Apr 03]

Born in Woodfork while her parents were working the town as wizards, Vi'lia Minthlisaathria began her life amongst humans. While still a youth, her parents ( her father is Taursinnae Minthsaathria and mother is Baelthri Lisaathria, both members of the Many Starred Cloak Wizard's Guild) moved out of the town and into the woods to devote themselves further to their studies. They were also afraid of how humans would influence their daughter, wanting her to be as elven as possible in custom, speech, and behavior. But her early years amongst humans made Vi'lia more tolerant of other races than her family, although it is still a point of contention with them. Although more tolerant of other races than her parents, Vi'lia is wary of others until they have proven themselves.

When Vi'lia came of age, her parents encouraged her to join an elven wizard's guild to study the arts, as they were secular Saathrials and had little interest in their elven goddess. However, two weeks into her studies and Vi'lia was unfulfilled. She yearned for spiritual completeness. She told her parents of her dilemma, and they relented, agreeing that perhaps she was not to become a wizard as they'd hoped. They granted her permission to study at the church academy and find her own way from that point forward. As her surname indicated, she found Saathrial to be closest to her beliefs and undertook her studies with ferocity in the church.

The Holy Order took her in as an acolyte and noted she had much talent. There she studied to become a paladin, swearing to uphold the church and the laws of the realm, to do good and to ensure the balance of Maathrial and Saathrial is maintained. When she graduated as a full paladin, she changed her surname to reflect her status: Saathlynthrial means "holy one who serves Saathrial" in that ancient and quite unusual dialect of elvish spoken by her kind. While her parents didn't quite understand this spiritual quest Vi'lia seemed to have taken on, they were happy that as a paladin she'd be able to use some of her magic training.

She had many fond memories of her childhood in Woodfork, and returned to catch up with the townsfolk and begin her service as a paladin. Upon arriving, she met Nifft, a human who she just barely remembered from childhood but his jovial and sly manner was a pleasing change of pace from the seriousness of the church. Thrust into adventure together, they endeavor to help the residents of Woodfork whenever they should need it.
