The story so far
Kulgar, Tharrison and the Company of the Slayers have just survived a huge battle in Rol between Dirgrimm (and his "gang") and an army of tunicians trying to take control of the city.  During the battle Kulgar and Tharrison regained possession of the Scepter of Brodargg and the diamond-bladed sword called Gashintain, two of the three legendary artifacts that they originally recovered from the isle of Posoe (way back on 02 Jul 03 [p97]).  The Crown of Brodargg is still missing, however, having mysteriously disappeared sometime after Dirgrimm's death during the battle.

12 Nov 08 (CY 583) cont: Tharrison leaves Harbinger and returns to the scene of the battle. Guards are here loading bodies onto carts. He watches, hoping to catch sight of the missing Crown, but finds nothing.

Dusk: Thar tours the taverns of Rol listening to the people's talk. About 2 out of 3 are in favor of Craigstan's tax reduction plan. He then returns to the boat and talks with Kul. They discuss future plans and finally decide to leave Rol and travel north. They know that Walc is eager to return the sword of St. Edric to its rightful home in Ashell. Hopefully they can enlist his aid against the remaining Disciples during the long journey.

Meanwhile, Kul opens the silver nip found in Vaults of Ard. He sips it. It tastes like hard liquor. He drinks the whole thing and finds it to be an invulnerability potion. Wasted. Oh well. It lasts about 10 minutes. Sleep.

13 Nov 08: Thar rises and eats. Kul & Thar move Thar's boat next to Harbinger. All rise and walk into town looking for food. Thar buys two shortswords for Strysynne. Kul buys lots of bandages. Eat breakfast and return to the boats.

13 Nov 08 cont: Thar explains to Strys all about the relationship between the Disciples and the Slayers. He tries to explain how important a role she plays as a Slayer, but she is extremely doubtful as to how she can help. He eventually convinces her to travel north with them. Meanwhile, Kul and Circh buy a barrel of ale from a nearby ship, the Past Due. Kul loads it aboard Harbinger. Kul and Thar then work out a departure plan: Kul, Circh and Walc will sail Harbinger, while Thar, Othello and Strys sail the other boat. They plan to stay within sight of each other during the journey. As they are preparing to leave, Thar sees a man run past the boat carrying a bag. He boards the Past Due and immediately shows the bag to the quartermaster. The quartermaster appears taken aback and gestures for him to come below deck. They watch as the same man then disembarks without the mysterious bag. Thar sees some action in the town beyond the docks. A tunician in leather armor confronts another man and cuts off his head with a sword. The tunician and his fellows seem to be city guards. They appear to be heading for the Past Due.

Glancing over at the ship, Thar sees a bag (not unlike the other) being dropped into the water. He swiftly dives in to recover it. Kul discerns Thar's plan, so he unmoors Harbinger in preparation for a quick escape. Strys, however, doesn't understand Thar's actions; she disembarks from Thar's boat and moves down the dock. Kul cannot believe it! He tells Othello to go after her. The tunicians board the Past Due and begin throwing their weight around. They appear to be looking for something (the bag, most likely). Kul, hoping that Othello can get Strys back quickly and that Thar will surface soon, lets Harbinger drift away from the dock.

Meanwhile, Thar has located the bag. He grabs it and brings it to the surface underneath the dock. Looking in, he finds only grass clippings. A decoy! Thar returns to his boat, but remains hidden from view behind it. Othello attempts to lead Strys back to the boat. She follows him, but suddenly she stops and grabs a bag from a nearby short man. The bag falls to the dock and [crown image]out spills the Crown! Othello, acting swiftly, moves in close and knocks the short man down making it appear as an accident. A tall man finds the opportunity to stab Strys in the side with a knife. The Crown rolls along the dock toward the water, but as it drops over the edge, Thar is there to catch it. He swims back to the boat again and quickly hides the Crown. Kul sees all of this transpire and decides that Othello may need some assistance, so he begins rowing Harbinger back to the dock as Othello defends Strys and delivers a series of stunning kicks to the tall man. All of this activity has attracted the attention of the tunician guards. Kul quickly moors Harbinger and disembarks, while Thar quietly climbs aboard his own boat. Two tunicians are heading over to Strys and Othello. Kul takes Strys by the arm and leads her to Thar's boat. Thar helps Strys into the cabin and then prepares to shove-off. Kul returns to Harbinger as Othello backs away from his opponent. The guards arrive and order the tall man to stop fighting, but Othello is already moving away. Kul & Thar push off from the dock. The guards order Othello to halt, but he makes a fine leap and lands safely on Thar's boat. Four guards swiftly board a boat and give chase, but they soon give up after Kul & Thar leave the Rol area. Sail on...

14-18 Nov 08: Sail towards the Clusters aboard Harbinger.

19 Nov 08: Arrive at Crossport. Resupply and sail on.

20-24 Nov 08: Sail towards isle of Pitik.

25 Nov 08: Arrive at Garn. Resupply and sail on.

26 Nov-01 Dec 08: Sail northward. During the trip, Othello instructs Thar in exercises of concentration of movement.

02 Dec 08: Fierce storm! The two boats almost collide and then are separated. By late afternoon the storm has passed and fortunately has left the two boats within sight of each other. Continue on.

Night: The skies are very cloudy and there are no stars to navigate by. Kul navigates with his lodestone.

03-09 Dec 08: Sail northward.

10 Dec 08: The Company approaches Sulward. Thar identifies himself as Wilton Perith and the local coast guard let both boats pass. They put in at the Perith Estate's private port. Thar, Kul and Strys travel into Sulward to visit an armorer. Thar needs his [+1] chainmail adjusted to fit Strys. It will take fourteen days. They return to the house.

Thar notices that Walc is quite happy to see his horse [Immelschtipp] again, and he suddenly realizes that Strys needs to learn to ride (for traveling on the mainland). He goes to the stables to check on the horses. As he enters he hears some rustling and whispering from above in the loft. He sneaks up the ladder and spies Walc's squire, Berlundtul, and a maid getting dressed. Thar sneaks back down, chooses a horse and then leaves. He meets Strys and Walc in the field and asks Walc if he would teach Strys to ride. Walc thinks that Thar & Kul only plan to stay for a couple of days. He is quite unhappy to hear that their stay is for two weeks!

Meanwhile, Kul and Circh sit together on Harbinger drinking ale. They talk a bit about the old days. Kul misses Euromund. They both get very drunk.

Latest News of Eastern Oerik: The Whyestil Lake and the Veng River are dry, while the Att and Crystal Rivers are low. The Nyr Dyv is also noticeably lower. Tunician activity is evident between Pni and the Lordship of the Isles. Crockport, Grabford, Littleberg and Chendl have all fallen to the armies of Iuz. Willip is under seige. Critwall, in the Shieldlands, has fallen as have the western most Bandit Kingdoms. Mitrik and Veluna City and the elven city of Highfolk have all fallen. Dyvers and Verbobonc are now under seige. The Great Kingdom, Aerdy, has sent their fleet of ships to the Wild Coast, as Nyrond and the other surrounding nations will not let Aerdy's ground troops pass through.

11-12 Dec 08: Kul and Circh continue to drink lots of ale, while Thar teaches Strys to ride.

13 Dec 08: Thar sword dances early in the morning. Kul wakes up late. Walc approaches Kul and asks him to go into town with him. They ride into the town of Sulward and Walc has Kul lead him to the armorer. Walc gives the armorer a pouch full of coins and demands that Strys' armor be finished in three days! He and Kul then eat some breakfast at a tavern. Kul buys two gallons of XX ale for Circh and himself. Thar, meanwhile, teaches Strys riding techniques. Afterwards, they spar with staves.

Afternoon: Othello instructs Thar.
Later: Kulgar fills in Thar on Walc's doings. Kul then finds Circh and gives her a gallon of the XX ale.

14 Dec 08: Thar continues training. Kul drinks all day.

15 Dec 08: More training. Othello blindfolds Thar and asks him to describe his surroundings. Thar undergoes some very specialized training by Othello. Kul drinks more ale.

Evening: Kul listens to Thar and Walc discuss St. Edric. Thar makes one last attempt to convince Walc to accompany them on their quest before returning the Sword of St. Edric to Ashell. Walc insists that he must fulfill his oath and return the sword first. Kul is quite sick of hearing about this oath and sword. He explains to Walc that they will not be following him back to Ashell, because their quest to locate and defeat the Disciples of Desolation is too important. Kul tries to lay some guilt onto Walc. As Kul leaves, Walc replies that he is "a sailor on the sea of sorrow".

16 Dec 08: Thar, Kul, Strys and Walc ride into Sulward and pick up the resized [+1] chainmail, which is then given to Strys. Afterwards, as they ride through town, they pass a procession. A woman tells Thar that the local Host (high priest), Sohaulavv is very ill. The procession is in his honor. Suddenly, Walc stops and stares at a symbol carried by one of the priests. Kul follows his gaze and recognizes a holy emblem from Trespin, the City of Healing. Walc follows the procession and speaks to the priest. Kul follows Walc closely, but Thar and Strys wait and then follow at a distance. The priest's name is Avrial. He was raised and schooled in Trespin and he serves the God of Earth, Brielauhaas. He has lived here for a number of years representing Trespin. The procession continues on and fills up the center square of Sulward, where everyone stops and waits. Apparently, everyone here has come to visit and pay homage to the Host in what may very well be his last days. Walc is very interested in this and Avrial invites both Walc and Kul to join him during his visit. First, however, they have a long wait...

Midafternoon: Avrial, Walc and Kul enter the temple and meet Sohaulavv, the Host. They are asked to keep their visit brief. He is bedridden and appears quite old and frail. Sohaulavv asks Walc if he carries a holy sword. Walc replies that he does and that he is returning it to the temple it was stolen from. Sohaulavv seems satisfied with this. He then asks if Kul carries a sword. When Kul answers yes, the Host asks if he is a mercenary. Kul replies, "No, I'm a Slayer." Sohaulavv becomes very excited and suddenly sits up in his bed. He orders Avrial to bring him a book. The Host leafs through the book and then has Avrial read a couple of passages pertaining to the four Slayers ["The Four Winds"]. Kulgar explains to him that the four Slayers are together, but they are unsure of where to go next. Kul learns that they must journey into the deepest part of the region known as Iuz to defeat Iuz the demon/demigod. Sohaulavv recites a few cryptic quotes. A few acolytes enter upon hearing all of the commotion. They try to calm the old man down and ask Kul and company to leave.

As Kul turns to leave he feels a strange evil enter the room and pass through him. Sohaulavv convulses and suddenly jumps up, attacking Walc. His hair is frazzled and he has grown claws. Kul draws Gashintain, but hesitates in striking. Walc manages to free himself. Kul sheathes the sword and tries to tackle the Host, but misses. Sohaulavv strikes Kul swiftly, inflicting a nasty wound. Walc pulls out his holy symbol, a small shield with three crossed swords (the middle one being gold and the two crossing it being silver) attached to the back. Avrial does the same, but the Host is undaunted. He suddenly grabs Walc's holy symbol and stabs Avrial in the neck with it. Walc pulls out his blade, Hollebrundt, and Sohaulavv backs away. Kul, meanwhile, is unsure of how he can help. Walc needs holy water, so Kul grabs a nearby basin. Walc dips his holy symbol into the water and then sprays it on the Host, causing him some pain. Sohaulavv leaps at Kul and the barbarian throws the entire basin of holy water at the Host. Avrial again shows his holy symbol. The acolytes join him, all producing their symbols. Sohaulavv shudders and a shadowy demon escapes from his limp body. Kul and Walc immediately attack! The battle goes well as the two Slayers destroy the demon. Surprisingly, the Host is still alive and the acolytes quickly run to his side and tend to him.

The Day They Killed Fear (Part 1)
[Thursday 28 January 1993] [p443-445]

16 Dec 08 cont: The Host calls Walc to his side and presses a silver chain and pendant into Walc's hand. He instructs Walc to journey to Rel Mord in Nyrond and speak at the Council of Nations to convince them to work together. Walc hesitates and then protests. He tries to explain that he already has a quest to fulfill, but Sohaulavv insists and asks that Walc please respect the last wish of a dying man. The Host then shudders and dies.

More people enter and are wondering what has happened. Walc looks at the silver pendant. He discovers that it is actually made up of two pieces connected together. One piece has a picture of an ear while the other one portrays a mouth. The Bishop enters to find Walc holding the pendant. He demands that it be returned to the church immediately. Walc does not understand his language and Kulgar steps in to explain things. However, as Kul begins translating their conversation, the Bishop interrupts, suggesting that Walc put the pendant on. Walc does so and suddenly finds himself able to understand all of their languages. Also, he discovers that everyone can now understand him perfectly. As a matter of fact, each person understands Walc's words in their own language. For Kulgar, this is very odd as all of Walc's words are translated into his tribal tongue.

Walc speaks to the Bishop directly now. He voices his intention to honor Sohaulavv's final request. The Bishop asks him if, after speaking to the Council, he will be ready to return the silver pendant. Walc agrees that he will indeed return it when his task is completed. He is a man of honor. The Bishop suggests that a novice of the church travel north with them to Rel Mord where they will meet the Representatives of the Lordship of the Isles at the Council. Walc agrees. The acolyte, Kallaerin, follows Kul, Walc and Avrial outside where they find Thar and Strys waiting. The party says farewell to Avrial and then heads for the wharves to secure passage aboard a ship. Kul fills Thar in along the way. Thar hires a ship to take them to Scant. They return to the house where Kul and Thar strip Harbinger and put her into storage.  Kul also leaves some of his equipment and belongings behind [for a complete listing see "Harbinger" in Kuldex G.]

17 Dec 08: Leave Sulward by ship. Berlundthul, Dalfholt and Kallaerin have now joined the Company of the Slayers.

18-26 Dec 08: Sail towards Scant.

27 Dec 08: Arrive at Scant. Thar goes directly to Trosco's house. A note on the door reveals that he has made the journey to Rel Mord. Leave Scant by ship and sail northeast through the Sea of Gearnat.

28-29 Dec 08: The ship sails along the coast of Nyrond through the Relmor Bay.

30 Dec 08: Arrive at Mithat in Nyrond. The Company leaves the ship here, but finds that a toll must be paid to pass through the town. Leave and travel north.

31 Dec-05 Jan 08 (CY 584): Travel north on horseback towards the city Rel Mord, capital of the Kingdom of Nyrond.

06 Jan 08: The Company arrives at Rel Mord. The gates are closed. Walc explains their purpose to the guards. The guards check a list of expected visitors and find Walc's name on the list (sent from Sulward by carrier pigeon! How efficient!). The Company is allowed to enter the city. Kul's first priority: Find a tavern. Thar, Circh, Othello and Strys accompany Kul while Walc, Kallaerin and the two squires explore the town. Kul and company enter a nearby tavern and order some grub. The barmaid is very friendly, but she informs them that their dog must wait outside. It seems that the landlord does not like dogs. Kul mutters something about Gram biting off her arm, but Thar just calmly tells Gram to lie down under the table. The landlord never says a word.

Everyone eats. Kul, Thar and Circh enjoy some roasted pig, while Othello just eats bread and water. Kul and Circh also consume large quantities of ale. Maybe a little too much for Circh, as she becomes quite drunk. She begins rambling on and on. Walc returns later and informs all that the Council of Nations begins in three days. Thar surprises all with news that he has already secured a place to sleep. He leads them to a nearby village and then to a house owned by his father's estate [the Perith Estate]. Eat some more and rest comfortably.

07 Jan 08: Thar, Kul and Strys explore the town. Thar is looking for Trosco. He does indeed find the sage in a tavern. Trosco takes them to his room where they can talk in private. Thar needs to learn how to operate the Prism Staff acquired in Ard's Vault. Given the proper time and materials Trosco says he could find out the stave's history, but he is not learned enough in the Arcane Arts to discover more. He suggests that Thar visit Polk, a sage in Greyhawk. This man is an expert in the Arcane Arts. As Trosco passes the staff back, Thar notices that the iron piece at the bottom end is loose. The half-elf carefully removes the iron piece and finds a hollow cavity inside the staff. A parchment [scroll: "I Am"] is rolled up within. On the scroll they find several lines of an ancient arcane language. Trosco cannot read it, but he does recognize its significance. He warns that this scroll is probably very powerful and very dangerous. He advises not to visit Polk after all. Trust no-one with this scroll. Thar returns the scroll to its secret home. The trio leave Trosco and go shopping. They buy new trousers for Kul and some traveling clothes for Strys. Thar spends about 106 sp.

Down at the wharves, Thar & Kul discover that the representatives from the Lordship of the Isles are staying in the nearby village of Pereterd. Return to the Perith estate where Thar examines the Prism Staff more closely. He discovers nothing new.

08 Jan 08: Thar teaches Strys sword-dancing and finds that she picks it up rather quickly.
Later: Thar leads Kul, Walc and Kallaerin to Pereterd. There they meet five men from the Lordship of the Isles:

Darrigen: Prime Councilor of the Lordship of the Isles
Folkkson: High Councilor of Sulward
Woltzerbund: Minister of Defense
Hhur: Commander of the Navy of the Lordship of the Isles
Barlin: Honored Scribe

Everything goes well and everyone seems to get along fine. Thar and Folkkson have met before. Kul & Thar are welcome to attend the Council of Nations with Walc.

09 Jan 08: Council Day: Othello and Strys are also welcomed to attend and join Walc, Kallaerin, Thar and Kul. Circh decides to remain at the house with Berlundthul, Dalfholt and Gram.

In the council chamber Kul & Thar meet an elven sheriff from the Silverwood named Lianar. The elf and half-elf talk briefly and Lianar mentions that he would like to talk more with Thar later. Trosco is also present. There are fourteen nations being represented today, with about ten representatives from each. Three men enter the chamber. The Moderator, the King, and the Scribe. The Moderator pounds his gavel and orders the council to begin. He describes the problem that all the nations face: war. The representatives begin standing and giving their own opinions. Tenh officially abstains. The doors to the chamber suddenly fly open and a large man enters. Voldimeur, councilman from the Great Kingdom of Aerdy demands a seat in the council. Chaos erupts. The other representatives don't want Voldimeur here. The Moderator tries to restore order, but he cannot. Walc stands and strides to the center of the chamber. He raises his arms and begins a speech. The representatives finally begin to settle down. Walc's "Fear is the Enemy" speech is heard by all in their own language. As Walc finishes his speech all are standing and cheering. Voldimeur stands dumbfounded.

Interlude
The Disciples are once again formed into a circle. One states that the time is perfect.
Another replies, "No. The Slayers are present."
The first answers, "There is nothing they can do. Even the Slayers cannot stop gravity."

Rel Mord: Back in the council chamber, the proceedings are interrupted abruptly as Merrill charges in warning Kulgar [Merrill image] that he is in danger. Kulgar has little time to be surprised to see her, though, as the huge windows suddenly shatter and the ceiling begins to collapse. The representatives rush for the exit in panic. Merrill manages to use her witchcraft to turn some of the rocks into dirt as they fall, but Kul and Thar both still suffer some damage from the heavy dirt as it hits them. A low rumble is felt and all light from above is blocked out. Kulgar and Tharrison look up to see the form of a huge shadow dragon blotting out the sun.

09 Jan 08 cont: The serpent-like shadow dragon slides into the council chamber, knocking down a wall and looks about menacingly. Kul hits it with his throwing-axe while Thar and Othello close in. Thar strikes it with the Phoenix Staff and Othello attacks with his two bo-sticks. They quickly discover that the dragon does not bleed or show any sign of a wound, yet it becomes obvious that their attacks do cause it some injury. The dragon easily gobbles up a fleeing council member. Kul draws both Uthael and Gashintain and charges into battle. Strys attacks with her sword, but then quickly falls back to fire stones from her sling. Walc sustains heavy damage from the dragon's claws. The dragon finally falls as one of Strys' rocks penetrates its eye and embeds itself in the creature's brain.

Another shadow dragon appears through the hole and advances. This dragon seems quicker and smarter than the first. Walc rallies some of the warriors from the council and they join in the battle. Kul strikes the new dragon with Gashintain, but the beast lunges and rakes him with a claw. He deftly avoids another attack, but the dragon grabs him in its great jaws and lifts him into the air. As the beast attempts to swallow him, Kul leaps from its mouth and falls fifteen feet to the stone floor below. The dragon charges at Kul. Kul's injuries are heavy, but he quickly regains his feet and attacks, driving Gashintain through the charging beast's open mouth and into its brain. The dragon's momentum carries it forward and Kul ends up inside its mouth as it dies. He emerges bloodied and heavily injured, but alive! Walc approaches Kul, showing much concern, but Kul stands tall and claims that he is fine. Walc raises his sword and speaks to the gathered council members. He calls Kul a hero and gives a brief victory speech about conquering fear. Kul and Thar look with concern toward Merrill who is spent from the power she has used.

Circle of Destruction
[Thursday 28 August 1997] [p447-449]
Home

09 Jan 08 cont: Kul and Thar both rush to Merrill's side to keep her from falling. Strys also follows, staying close to Thar. As they sit Merrill down, she states that there is still danger here. She saw a vision of "death by earth and fire". Kul looks about and sees Othello and Walc nearby, helping two council members regain their feet. There seems to be no sign of immediate danger, but he has learned to trust Merrill's warnings. He shouts a warning to Othello and Walc and suggests that they move out of the ruined building.

Interlude
Ten Disciples are formed into a circle with one man, Scathart, in the center. Scathart is horribly scarred from head to toe. He bends down to lift a red hot brazier with only his bare hands. He lifts the brazier high over his head and then dumps the hot coals into his open mouth! He screams in pain. The chanting of those in the circle becomes louder drowning out his screams...

Rel Mord: Kul lifts Merrill in his arms and begins heading for the front entrance, hoping that the others will follow. Thar follows closely, leading Strys by the hand, but Othello and Walc proceed much more slowly as they are helping a couple of the wounded council members walk. As they look back at the dragons they see that both corpses are beginning to change color, eventually turning red-hot. As Kul and Thar approach the doorway they can feel the heat radiating from the dragon corpses. They find that a crowd of people have gathered outside of the ruined council chamber building. The people are beginning to crowd around the door and it slows Kul and Thar down a bit. Kul warns them to stay back as he exits the building with Merrill still in his arms. Blazing heat can now be felt radiating from the two dragons as their corpses turn from red to white-hot. Kul and Thar clear the doorway and try to pick up their pace. There is a sudden ear-splitting explosion as Walc and Othello come charging out of the building which suddenly erupts like a volcano. Everyone dives to either side of the doorway hoping that the remaining walls will provide cover from the oncoming wall of flame. As he hits the ground, Kul tries to shield Merrill from the falling debris, but he quickly realizes that the size of the falling rocks will mean death if he stays in one place, so he jumps up, lifting Merrill again and begins to run. Thar has also realized the danger and leads Strys by the hand, pulling her along as they run away from the ruined building. Othello and Walc run also, but Walc is slowed significantly by his armor and wounds, and the council member at his side. As the second dragon explodes, Walc is lifted into the air by a second massive wall of flame and thrown far ahead of the others! [Kallaerin dies from the explosions.]

Interlude
The Disciples are still formed in a circle with another man, Joernseah, now kneeling in the center. Joernseah has a bruised forehead and hands. He repeatedly bashes his head and open palms on the stone floor!

Rel Mord: Everyone runs to Walc's crumpled, lifeless body. Othello kneels to help Walc. Thar encourages Kul to go on ahead and carry Merrill back to the Perith estate. Kul hurries off with Merrill, but decides to take the long route towards the inn avoiding the ruined council chamber. The earth begins to tremor slightly as Othello continues to kneel over Walc. The monk makes a sort of guttural chanting as he casts some kind of healing spell on the fallen Slayer. Walc remains unconscious, however, so Thar decides that he must carry him to safety. The earth begins to shake violently as Thar lifts Walc over his shoulders. Thar decides to take the shortest and safest route possible; he leads the group past the council chamber, heading towards his family's home. Kul and Thar have heard of earthquakes, but have never experienced one first hand until a massive earthquake shakes the whole city, destroying many buildings. Kul manages to escape harm. He passes the inn and continues on toward the estate. Thar is clipped by a piece of a collapsing building, but continues onward. Othello and Strys survive the quake unharmed.

Interlude
The blind Disciple, Armaan, speaks, "The Slayers have split up".
A skinny Disciple, Colgaer, enters the center of the circle holding a fresh (human?) heart in his hands. Blood runs down and drips from his arms. Colgaer bites into the heart and then cries out! The Disciples raise their voices in a moaning chant, drowning out Colgaer's cries.

Rel Mord: Kul continues towards his destination, moving as quickly as possible. The earth has stopped shaking, but a thick cloud of dust hangs heavy in the air all around. Suddenly, two gnolls wielding swords appear from within the dust cloud ahead. Not worried in the least about two stray gnolls (and thinking even less about where they may have come from so suddenly!), Kul quickly places Merrill on her feet behind him and then draws Gashintain. The first gnoll strikes him, while the second misses and then Kul misses on his first attack. Meanwhile, Thar's group is also proceeding quickly through the cloud of dust when two sword-wielding gnolls suddenly come charging at them. Thar suddenly drops Walc from his shoulders and quickly has Asterlain spinning in his hands. Othello leaps forward and deftly catches Walc. Thar avoids damage and strikes swiftly [critical], breaking his opponent's upper arm.

Kul is nicked [2 pts] and then hacks recklessly at a gnoll [critical], chopping off it's head! He follows with a solid strike to the other. Two more gnolls appear from the dust cloud! Thar remains unhurt and strikes hard again [critical], crushing an opponent's skull. Strys, wielding two swords, attacks, but fails to strike. Two more gnolls appear!

Kul kills another opponent leaving a big gash in it's neck [max dam]. Two more gnolls appear! Thar is nicked [3 pts] and then misses his opponent. Strys attacks the broken-armed gnoll, but misses twice. Othello closes in to help Thar and Strys, now that the unconscious Walc is safely behind them. Two more gnolls appear! As the dust from the earthquake finally begins to settle, Thar can now see that the gnolls are approaching from around a corner up ahead.

Kul begins to realize that if the gnolls keep coming there is a real danger of becoming overwhelmed. He decides to stop hacking recklessly and tries to concentrate his attacks. He misses on the first attack, but then strikes on the second. One of the gnolls sneaks through Kul's defense and strikes him squarely, but Merrill shouts a word of command and the gnoll is suddenly shoved back, reducing the impact of the blow. Two more gnolls appear! Thar dodges, parries and then counters! He injures one gnoll badly and then swiftly strikes another. His strategy is to wound as many as possible, weakening and slowing them down, thus providing opportunities for Strys to follow up with kills. The strategy begins to work as Strys finally kills the broken-armed gnoll with a quick and deadly slash and pierce maneuver. Thar silently approves of her technique. Othello strikes a gnoll with his bo-stick, driving it back. Two more gnolls appear!

Kul strikes a gnoll, but is also struck himself. Two of the gnolls try to move past Kul to close in on Merrill. Kul tries desperately to block one of them, but the gnoll suddenly falls back, screaming from a Magic Missile in its face. The other gnoll succeeds in getting by and Merrill is nicked as she flees from her attacker. Two more gnolls appear! Kul begins to give ground, afraid for Merrill who is fleeing quickly behind him. Thar avoids a couple of attacks, but also fails to strike with his whip. Othello, very fatigued, strikes twice with his bo-sticks. Strys moves in and pierces a gnoll in the side. She then lunges again and pierces another gnoll through the heart! Deftly, she spins and avoids an attack. Two more gnolls appear!

Kul strikes two previously injured opponents killing them. He sees Merrill fleeing and gives ground, falling back towards Merrill's position. The gnoll succeeds in striking Merrill hard. She stumbles, but keeps on running! Two more gnolls appear! Thar defends against two gnolls. He aims both of his attacks at Strys' opponent and strikes twice! The gnoll falls back, injured. Strys strikes it twice in the throat, killing it! Thar is impressed, but he observes that she is moving around a bit too much to form an adequate wall of defense. He orders her to maintain her position and not to give ground. Othello strikes once.
