The Cedric & Adama Campaign

Home

Gamemaster: fraz (#3, 1981)
Rules System: AD&D 1st Ed.
Setting: World of Greyhawk
Characters:

Comments:
fraz: "Steven and Adam were best friends in high school and had never played D&D before, so I believe that this campaign was my first attempt to introduce two brand new players to the game. I actually can recall nothing of the sessions now, except a vague image of Steven and Adam hanging out in my room at James St. The campaign was rather short lived and also, I'm quite sure, lacking in any depth or direction. It was simply beginners style hack-n-slash. A homemade map found with the CRs shows the entrance to 'The Tunnels of Tarmek' in the Kron Hills. There is also another map of the tunnels themselves, which appear to be randomly generated.

"Also, Greg P.'s character is included here because I remember him being a very good friend of Steven F. The campaign number written on Borimor's AD&D CR is '2', but I'm almost positive that he played in this game and not the mysterious Thigargus Campaign. I could be wrong, but these mistakes are known to happen with these campaign numbers." fraz 02 Apr 03

Setting: World of Greyhawk (spin-off of the Rex Campaign)

Description:
After the conclusion of the Rex Campaign, the character of Loakian continued on in a one-player solo campaign. Not much was planned plot-wise. The campaign was more a vehicle for Loakian to continue his research and explore new areas beyond the limits of the map of Eastern Oerik. fraz 27 Mar 05

Mudge Campaign #1

Home

Gamemaster: Jim M. (#1)
Rules Systems: Basic D&D and AD&D 1st Ed.
Setting: TSR Module B2: The Keep on the Borderlands (World of Greyhawk?)
Characters:

Description:
Jim was the one who introduced our group to the world of D&D and this was the game that started it all! The grand-daddy of D&D campaigns! Mudge has pointed out that, technically, this was not actually his first campaign, since he had run an adventure for his cousin, Steven, prior to starting this game, yet all of the character records I have seen from this campaign are marked with the number "1", so for the sake of clarity and consitency we will continue to refer to this as Campaign #1. fraz 27 Mar 05

Comments:
Steve C.: Kan (pronounced as in the Wrath of) was an elvin fighter-MU. The scenario was the Keep on the Boarderlands - the very module upon which the FK game has thus far been based. Two nifty house rules: encumbrance not enforced (I think either Hart or Almeda was carrying a row boat for a while, until Almeda got a folding boat), and we were all allowed a "recovery swing" (meaning that we got two attacks per round).

The recovery swing is based upon our understanding that an attack was a swing, and since you need to "reset" anyway, you would be bringing you weapon (invariably a long sword) back to fully-cocked position. Kind of like baseball.

Happily, we were fortunate enough to find a pouch on the side of the road en route to the keep (as in, we started with a pouch that we found) and in the pouch was a silver ring. That ring, while still in the pouch, was stolen from Kan in the keep by a mendicant of some sort, and we had to demonstrate to the guards to whom it really belonged.

Kan: "It's a plain silver band."

Mendicant: "It's gold with silver inlay."

[everyone looks inside]

Guard to Mendicant: "That's it; you're coming with me."

The ring turned out to be a ring of regeneration. Remember the days when you rolled to see if you started with a magical item? Remember "Magic stores" (I've got all this gold; I'm going to the magic store to buy something.")? Do you remember buying wishes? 10,000 GP as I recall.

How about Mike H. throwing away a +7 mace because he didn't want to part with his flame brand? Back then the indication that a weapon was enchanted was that its weight - in GP - was reduced. "This mace feels like it's not even there, it's so light."

How about the dragon in the Caves of Chaos. After defeating it (what were we: third level?), there was a huge pile of gold, weapons, and jewels. On a spring of inspiration I opted for the beaten-up box that no one wanted. In the box was six wands: Fireball, Cold (by which we were thereafter able to cross the river), Paralysis..., I can't recall the other three - light? Eventually, he also had a wand of lightning; I don't think that it came in the boxed set, but it might have. Remember magical tape, which enabled us to "fix" broken magical items?

At one point Kan got himself a flying broom (command word: "cemon" pronounced "c'm on"). I recall in one session running up against a large band of orcs in the forest and getting away from them on the broom. Having trussed my mount to the broom I was able to fly just above tree level. The donkey wasn't as fortunateÉ

So then Hart gets his own magic broom (command word: Flemmee). He couldn't quite figure out how it worked though:

"Flemmee!"

[The broom lifts gently from the ground]

"Flemmee!"

[The broom settles back to the ground]

"Flemmee!"

[The broom lifts gently from the ground]

"Left."

[The broom turns (rotates) to the left]

"Right."

[The broom turns (rotates) to the right]

"Forward Flemmee!"

[The broom flies forward, then (as you are now going pretty quickly) crashes to the ground]

"Go Flemmee!"

[The broom flies forward, then (as you are now going pretty quickly) crashes to the ground]

The Naith Campaign

Gamemaster: Steve L. (#2)
Rules Systems: AD&D 1st Ed., Spell Law
Setting: World of Greyhawk
Characters:

Comments:
Steve C.: "[Adam's character,] Dirk was, in fact, played a few times - when one died another mysteriously reappeared. You might recall that when this happened in the game, that I was playing Calabea and wanted to be a bit of a dickhead (unbelievable, I know). Dirk was, in that game, Calabea's life-long friend, and I reasoned that it was suspicious that when he died another one happened to appear. This new one proclaimed himself a Ranger, but I had my doubts. I set a test for him to track Halex (Jim's expertly-played annoying halfling - so expertly played, in fact, as to be practically second nature) and his NPC friend [Gormadoc] and recover them. Halex was not keen on this idea, and neither was the new Dirk, but they played through anyway. My thinking at the time was that if the new Dirk (Adam never used any other name) was not able to recover the halflings, then he probably wasn't a bounty hunter, which was my fear (that he was). Halex and [Gormadoc] lead Dirk in a chase, but they returned by themselves, and so the whole plan was foiled. Little bastard." smc 03 Apr 03

Jim M.: "I seem to recall that we used Spell Law for this game. I also remember one of the 'dreams' that Naith had -- but since it was printed in the handbook that elves don't dream, it was more of a hallucination -- of a white horse that left a hoofprint that was Diablo O-shaped, and of the blacksmith that turned to Naith and told him something along the lines of: 'When you are ready, come get her'.

"On an amusing side note, one of the listed possessions on Halex's inventory is 'Calabea's mom's dish'." ..jm 04 Apr 03

Rex Campaign The Rex Campaign

Home

Gamemaster: fraz (#1 1980)
Rules System: Basic D&D, AD&D 1st Ed.
Setting: World of Greyhawk
Characters:

Description:
The Rex Campaign was my first campaign as a GM. The plot (such as it was) was epic in scale, ultimately covering many years (CY 639-673) and featuring a destructive war of the gods. I certainly wouldn't say it was a masterpiece of plot and story, because I know it wasn't. It was more of a series of events tied loosely together by the actions of several powerful PCs. I was a new GM and we were all still in that early free-for-all, Monty-Haul phase of our gaming. Yet we had a ton of fun and that's what counted.

The initial plot of the Rex Campaign involved a multi-part quest for a hammer called Jolmenroth (or commonly shortened to just Roth), a legendary artifact inspired by Thor's Hammer. The quest was tailored for and undertaken by Rex Evenstar, who was played by Gordon, my best friend from childhood.

The campaign continued on after the quest was completed with the PCs eventually settling in the village of Hommlet (from the TSR module T1). This became their base of operations for further adventuring and trouble-making in general until a terrible war of the gods ultimately destroyed the village. Some of the players remained in Hommlet to rebuild, while others moved on to set up a new base of operations called Castle Southstar on the northern-most of the Olman Isles on the southern-most fringes of the Azure Sea.

Many players came and went through this campaign, but the few characters that remained through the whole thing leveled up fairly high (around the 10-15th lvl range). The ultimate climax of the campaign was the War of Oerik, which pitted King Rex of Almor against Queen Genine of the Great Kingdom of Aerdy. The campaign effectively ended after this final confrontation, although for Loakian the adventure continued on in what became Campaign #1A, The Loakian Campaign. fraz 27 Mar 05

The Zak Campaign

Home

Gamemaster: Steve L. (#1)
Rules Systems: AD&D 1st Ed., Spell Law
Setting: World of Greyhawk
Details and game logs: The Zak Campaign
Characters:

Description:
Steve L.'s big game (which he referred to as "the biggie", so marked on Ciona's CR). During this campaign, the players tackled such classic modules as the Giants (G1, G2, G3) and Drow series (D1, D2, D3), culminating in the confrontation with Lolth, the spider queen/demi-goddess in module Q1. Prior to these epic adventures, though, were the wild, yet undocumented, early days that led up to the "great melt down".

Comments:
Jim M.: "What I do remember of this game was that just about every kid in high school was in it; at its peak, we had Adam P.(magic user, I think), Michael D. (fighter?), Peter G. (playing an assassin), Brady C. (playing a paladin, who was Zak's buddy)... I think Fraz came in after the 'great melt down': we were at Brady's house when it happened (he lived behind the high school; we had to remove our shoes when we entered his house, and his couch was wrapped in protective plastic). It started with Peter's assassin taking Brady's paladin's holy symbol and saying 'oh, it's dirty -- let me clean it for you' and then spat on it. Adam and Michael started stirring up trouble (casting spells, drawing weapons) when Zak announced that he was drinking the two unidentified potions that he had been carrying.

"'Okay', the DM commented calmly, amid the whirl of chaos. 'You drink a potion of super heroism, followed by a potion of storm giant strength'. Adam's response was 'Oh shit! I open a portal and I am out of here'. I think Zak was able to get one hit on Michael's character before he escaped as well.

"That game was much smaller after that. I still remember Brady's deflated 'this sucks' expression as he became a target. Heh." ..jm 04 Apr 03
